Last year a few of our athletes participated in the SACSSA Cross Country competition for the first time. This competition coincides with the Zonal and Provincial Winter Sports on 10 May. This year we entered U17 and U19 athletes. 21 athletes participated at Zonal level in Estcourt of which 18 proceeded to represent Northern Natal in Richard’s Bay at the provincials.
At the provincials on 14 June Mondli Mpungose and Mamazane Maphanga won gold; Elona Joosten, Louis Geldenhuys and Bonumusa Nkala won silver and Mxolisi Mthembu, Nontokozo Buthelezi and Nico Buthelezi won bronze.
10 athletes ran in the SACSSA National Cross Country Championship held in Newcastle. Mamazane Maphanga was appointed as one of the KZN team captains. We won the first three positions in the Men Youth race with Mondli Mpungose coming first, followed by Mxolisi Mthembu and Louis Geldenhuys. Thalente Ngcobo came sixth. Mamazane Maphanga came first in the Women Junior race and Nontokozo Buthelezi, third. In the Men Junior race we had three runners in the top four positions with Bonumusa in second place, Nico in third and Thobisani Zondi in fourth place. Siyethemba Zuma came sixth. KZN won all the age category awards.
We definitely have the talent at Domino Servite to do well in Cross Country as demonstrated at the national SACSSA level. Our hills are ideal for training.
