Gabriel Khwela

Gabriel KhwelaAll the soccer teams had a busy season and played a total of 13 matches against local schools, however, four defeats for the 1st team and one defeat and 2nd draws for the 2 team did not make for a very successful soccer season. In addition, two top players, Mondli Sibisi and Nkosinathi Majola were injured.

The Under 15 team was the most successful team having won all the matches that they played.

One of the most fulfilling things in life is to have an opportunity to unleash God-given talents and discover your potential. Playing netball this year was not only hard training with much perspiration, but many girls found it a lot of fun.

We are grateful to our teachers and new coach who supported us and invested their time in our fitness. Of all the schools we played against, Greytown High gave us a taste of their medicine when the u19 team lost 23-7. The highlight of the season was the KZNCSSA Winter Sports competitions where we excelled. Congratulations to Senziwe Kunene u19 , Dorcas Maphanga u19, Nomusa Maphanga u19, Thato Mosebi u19 and Tlholo Mosebi who achieved KZNCSSA colours.

After such a great season, should netball not become an all season sport?

JP

In the absence of our expert coach, Mr Combrink, our first team struggled to maintain last season’s performance. We lost all four of our matches, although at least one was very closely contested. However, the excellent potential of the up-and-coming junior team raises our expectations for next season. The future is bright!

On the run

On the runIn March we were invited to a hockey festival hosted by Wartburg Kirchdorf School where we played four matches of which we won three and lost one. This was a great start to the 2007 hockey season.

In April, the boys’ and girls’ teams were invited to a friendly match at Wartburg. The girls drew 3-3 but the boys unfortunately lost 0-3. The month of May saw a number of highs and lows. Early in the month the 1 team displayed good hockey skills when they played on home ground against Stanger High and beat them 3-0. Two later matches played in Pietermaritzburg were sound victories for the girls, however, 29 May will be remembered as a day of defeat when we were beaten by Hermannsburg Deutsche Schule 5-0! The season ended with a match on ASTRO against Maritzburg Christian School which we lost 2-1. (During the season, the 1st team was often supplemented by 2nd team players.)

Hockey boys 2007

Hockey boys on defence

Hockey boys on defenceThe 2007 players exceeded all expectations. Having lost many of our star senior players from 2006, new talent had to be developed, setting the scene for adversity. But some courageous performances proved the opposite. Although we started the season with two losses, one against Stanger High and another against a traditionally strong Wartburg Kirchdof, we fought back with two draws, of which the 3-3 score against arch rivals Hermannsburg was particularly pleasing. In the past, Hermannsburg has always outplayed us, having beaten us 5-0 in 2006 and 6-2 in 2005!

Outstanding athletics results 2007

KZN medalists

That Northern Natal could capture the team trophy at the KZNCSSA Athletics Championship was a highlight of the season. We have broadened the base of participation. Never before have so many had to opportunity to participate in athletics beyond the Interhouse.

However, I must add, the quality of the performances has declined slightly. Nevertheless, something will need to be done to raise the performance levels of our athletes.

Domino Servite was awarded the Top School Award in KZNCSSA for 2007 at the Awards Evening on 10 November. Sportsmen and women achieved the most provincial caps overall considering all sport codes.
