Two teams from DSS entered the WESSA Quiz (Umvoti Group) held at Hermannsburg High School on 14 May. The A team included Maria Fourie, Joseph Grobler, Iliya Matvejuk, & Bongiwe Nyembe and Team B – Sphesihle Nzama, Bongumenzi Nxumalo, Skhumbuzo Myeza & Mxolisi Ndlovu. The quiz covers a broad range of natural topics and it is very educational. Questions in the 4 sections ranged from bird sounds to general planet knowledge, tides, animal and insect life, plant life and ecosystems. The quiz master knows the names of animals, plants and birds in English, Afrikaans, Zulu and Latin which help the learners express themselves in their home language. Team B team knew several answers in Zulu and were the only ones to get those questions correct. They found the high standard of the quiz extremely challenging but came away with the prize for the most promising group – a box of wildlife information booklets. The audience also gets the opportunity to participate. Team A came third and received a framed certificate and 4 wildlife books as prizes.
