Winter Sports 2008 – Domino Servite School

Due to the fact that we did not have a sports field this year we only participated in the U19 age category in Soccer, Netball, Boys and Girls Hockey and Volleyball. 54 U19 players participated in the Northern Natal Zonal Winter Sports Trials in Estcourt on 10 May. 34 players were selected to represent Northern Natal at the KZNCSSA Provincial Winter Sports. Some represented Northern Natal in more than one code of sport.

Provincials
At the Provincials on 22-24 May the Northern Natal U19 teams did very well. The Girls U19 Hockey team won all their games and overshadowed the opposition as did the Boys U19 Hockey team. Eric Hailstones was true to his name and made sure that the hockey ball shot into the opposition goal at regular intervals. Wilhelm Meyer also did well and lost a tooth in the process.

Fortunately 911 was there emergencies. Northern Natal also did extremely well in Netball with the Maphanga duo playing a pivotal role. The Northern Natal U19 soccer team did us proud. There was some strong competition in that category but Northern Natal won all their games with Simiso Ngubane marshalling his troops like a good Field Marshal. The Boys U19 volleyball team had all the talent but somehow could not find their rhythm at the beginning. The more they played the better they got at it. The Girls U19 volleyball team also had the better of all their opponents. Nonhlanhla Mbatha was strong on the attack and as solid as a rock in the defence.
It is not easy for selectors to select individual players and often a strong team is at a disadvantage when it comes to that. Although the U19 Northern Natal teams won all their round robin matches and were superior to their opponents, not many were selected to receive KZN colours.
