As part of the ongoing partnership between Domino Servite School and local Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, the Grade 7 to 12 classes were each assigned an ECD centre to support and serve throughout the year. 20 May was the second visit for the year.
SIMBONGE CRECHE GRADE 12
Our second visit to Simbonge was a rewarding experience. We were warmly welcomed by Mrs Zuma and her team who made us feel at home.
The girls spent the morning painting the exterior of the building with a fresh coat of powder blue paint. The new colour has given the school a cheerful facelift. Emseni Consulting fitted gutters to channel rainwater runoff from the roof into the JoJo tank that had been installed by aQuelle.
The boys tackled some physically demanding tasks. Working in rock-hard soil, they dug trenches around the playground area and planted recycled car tyres, making it safer for children using the slides. The tyres were also given a coat of bright paint. Others took on the challenge of installing a brand-new gate and fence posts, a task that required no small amount of effort.
While we were busy, we noticed one of the staff members working in the garden. Little did we know that she was harvesting dozens of madumbes. Soon afterwards, other staff members prepared plate after plate of delicious, steaming hot madumbes for everyone to enjoy. We ate to our hearts’ content. We also took home a generous supply for our boarders and staff to enjoy.
We are grateful to Mrs Zuma and her team for their warmth and generosity. It is wonderful to learn, serve and give back.
MOMOTHEKA CRECHE GRADE 11
Our creche visit was such a fun, happy and special experience. We spent the day making the place brighter and more welcoming while also spending time with the little children.
We helped paint a chalkboard on the wall and put up colourful new posters. We painted the outside walls of the building which updated the look. Emily and Anathi painted the alphabet on the outside walls and added pretty flowers. The best part of the day was spending time with the children. We played with them on the jungle gym, sang nursery rhymes and joined in with their games. Their smiles, laughter and excitement made the day even more special. We gave them little snack packs which, of course, they were delighted to receive.
It was a wonderful experience to see how happy the children were. It felt good knowing that we had made their crèche a brighter and happier place. We had lots of fun while making a positive difference. Tanya Gideon
GRADE 10
KHOMBA CRECHE GRADE 9
On 20 May, the Grade 9 class visited Khomba creche. The experience taught us the importance of teamwork because we worked together as a group of girls with enthusiasm and cooperation and without complaining or grumbling.
Throughout the day, we participated in a variety of activities. Upon our arrival, we told the children the story of The Seven Goats and the Fox. We also sang songs for them, and they delighted us by singing songs in return. We spent time playing games with the children and, at times, enjoyed playing with one another as well.
It was one of the most memorable and enjoyable school days of the term. The visit was both fun and rewarding, leaving us with a sense of accomplishment and many happy memories. Kuhlekonke Bhengu
We visited Khomba creche as part of our commitment to serving the community. There was a great deal of work to be done, and we began by painting the exterior walls of the crèche. While waiting for the paint to dry, we enjoyed a friendly game of soccer together.
We then dug a long trench and planted 15 tyres in the ground, which we painted in bright colours to create an attractive and fun play area for the children. In addition, we repaired the windows to help improve the condition and appearance of the building.
The day was both productive and rewarding, and we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to serve others. We are grateful to God for giving us the strength, willingness, and opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of the children and the wider community. Ntando Khomo
NTANDO CRECHE GRADE 8
The Grade 8 learners visited Ntando creche where they took part in several improvement projects. They weeded the grounds, planted and painted tyres, removed the old swings and installed new ones. They also demolished the old concrete structures and laid new concrete slabs to improve the play area and facilities. L Marloth
During our previous visit, we painted a wall blue. On this visit, we applied a second coat of blue paint and touched up the skirting boards with white paint. We also read the story of Jonah to the children, asked them questions about the book, and sang songs with them. Afterwards, we played games outside. NDLOTHI CRECHE GRADE 7
Our ECD trip to Ndlothi creche was great fun. The children thoroughly enjoyed the colouring activity and we also brought along play dough and books for them to use. To brighten the classroom, we decorated it with colourful posters.
We helped improve the outdoor area by repairing the garden fence and working in the garden. The front gate and the main building were painted, giving the crèche a fresh new look. The building is now completely green. A new slide was installed on the jungle gym which the children were very excited about.
Later, we enjoyed playing games outside, including jumping over cones and ropes. It was a fun-filled time for both the children and us.
As we said our goodbyes, there were many smiles and cheerful waves. It was heartwarming to see how much the children appreciated our visit and we left with happy memories that we will cherish for a long time. Tabea Greyling
