PRIZE GIVING

The annual Prize Giving Ceremony was held on 3 December in the KSB auditorium, where we celebrated the achievements of DSS learners in academics, co-curricular and sport. Confidence Dikgole, CEO of the Independent Examinations Board, was our Guest of Honour and what a privilege it was to host her.

The event opened with a warm welcome from the Chairman of the Board, Michael Ngubane, who made everyone feel at home. In her speech, the principal, emphasised the importance of developing grit—the ability to persevere, grow and maintain discipline through challenges. She introduced the Zulu concept nomakanjani, meaning unwavering determination regardless of circumstances, which resonates universally as a symbol of resilience. Life often presents unexpected and unfair difficulties, but true strength lies in shaking off setbacks and stepping up, embodying resilience and perseverance.

In her speech, Confidence Dikgole pointed out that Domino Servite stands out not for grand facilities but for its unwavering commitment to excellence and integrity. With a consistent 100% pass rate and strong bachelor pass rates, the school achieves remarkable success despite socio-economic challenges, fostering resilience and character.

She emphasised that resilience, discipline and courage are keys to success. Success and failure are temporary; what matters is the determination to keep going. She encouraged learners to build inner discipline, avoid comparisons and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. She praised school leadership and staff for their quiet, humble work in shaping character and thanked parents for their sacrifices and support on the educational journey. Education she said is a partnership that empowers learners to innovate, lead and uphold strong values.

She concluded with an inspiring story of a rural learner she met who walked 26 km daily to and from school. She asked the learner how he managed to do this every single day. “The road is long but my dreams are longer than the road,” was his reply. His perseverance led to outstanding results, proving that success belongs not to privilege but to persistence. Her closing message reminded learners that while they cannot control where their journey begins, they can control where it leads—despite emotional, academic or financial challenges.

Ms Dikgole presented the awards to learners who were recognised for outstanding performances in various subjects, leadership roles and extracurricular activities. Special awards included Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, Annelle Jaeger and Tim Wälz; Grade 12 Mathematics & Double Sciences, Sofie Schobben; Grade 12 Outstanding Academic Achievers, Caleb Schmunk, Sofie Schobben & Ludwig McGill; aQuelle Make a Difference winners, Alexander Gideon, Annelle Jaeger & Kim Stegen and aQuelle-Emseni Good Fellowship award winners, Ludwig McGill & Siphokazi Mthonti.
