SEEDLING HANDLING

A Sebenzela Umdali course on seedling handling was presented by Muzikayise Ndlovu on 19 February. A number of learners from the SP and FET phases attended and were taught practical tips and procedures for growing seedlings. Using recycled materials like 5L plastic bottles and empty egg trays, mini gardens were created by the participants by mixing compost with earth to create fertile soil into which spinach, beetroot and cabbage seedlings were planted.

In a second course presented on 15 May by Muzikayise Ndlovu participants learned hands-on how to care for a vegetable garden. Participants created mini vegetable gardens using 5L water bottles cut in half and learned how to grow seedlings from seeds. The course took place partly outdoors, where participants learned about soil preparation, planting and the correct watering schedule for seedlings.
