SIMBONGE ECD

On 5 May the Grade 12 learners visited Simbonge Pre-Primary School. What began as a service opportunity quickly became a deeply meaningful experience that has left a lasting impression on us all.

We arrived early, shovels in hand, eager to bring about a small but significant change. The children’s bright eyes and excited laughter greeted us before we even stepped through the gate. It was humbling to realise how much joy they brought us, even though we had come with the intention of bringing happiness. Their innocent, expectant faces stirred something within us – a quiet responsibility to contribute to their lives.

The pre-primary, though modest, was surprisingly well-kept, a testament to the dedication of its staff. We quickly noticed that the garden needed attention. The boys began clearing and preparing the space while the girls spent time engaging the children in play and activities. In this simple division of tasks, we discovered the strength of teamwork and the value of everyone’s contribution.

As we weeded, raked and shaped paths, we realised that working together with a shared purpose brought us closer – nor only to each other but also to the community we served. When the work was done, we sang a song of thanks and appreciation. The caregivers were deeply moved by our efforts and encouraged us to return.

Reflecting on the visit, I’ve come to understand that small acts of service carry profound meaning. The experience reminded us that change begins with willingness – and that joy, kindness and community are powerful forces in any setting. We left inspired, not only by what we gave but by what we received in return.
