The 2018 National Bridge Building Competition was held on 31 August at St Albans College in Pretoria.
Monica Allen, Nadine Engelbrecht and Elsi Haux represented DSS. There was a curveball thrown at the learners: they had to build a foot bridge, so the bridge had to be much narrower than normal i.e.50mm rather than 100mm.
The girls took it in their stride and built a bridge that carried 234 kg. This was enough to earn them first prize. The bridge that took the second place carried a weight of 192 kg.
