As part of the ongoing partnership between Domino Servite School and local Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, each Grade 7 to 12 class was assigned an ECD centre to support and serve throughout the year. 11 March was the first visit for the year.
SIMBONGE CRECHE GRADE 12
MOMOTHEKA CRECHE GRADE 11
Our first visit was truly a fun and memorable. We went with the goal to make a difference. After greeting the children, we set off to work. While some of the girls repainted the sturdy gate and the colourful paving, the others played and sang with the 50 children. The boys tidied up the vegetable garden and planted fresh grass on the sandy playground. Cheerful shrieks echoed as the little people enjoyed their Easter egg hunt (of half-melted easter eggs). Before we returned home, the staff spoiled us with a tasty lunch. Our heads are spinning with ideas to further improve the creche on our next visit. Carine Pienaar & Kim Stegen
KHOMBA CRECHE GRADE 9
On 11 March we visited Khomba creche. We were welcomed with songs and poems performed by the children. They were quite shy at first but after a while they were freely playing with us. The Grade 9 class established a vegetable garden and painted the inside walls of their classroom. Our visit was an enjoyable, uplifting experience and we are looking forward to visiting our little friends again. Jerusha Schneider
NTANDO CRECHE GRADE 8
The Grade 8 class visited Ntando creche for the first of three visits. During our time there, we worked in the garden, where we harvested potatoes and planted cabbage, beetroot and lettuce seedlings. We also expanded the garden and prepared new beds. In addition to our gardening, we created a seating area for the children using tyres. We painted the tyres in bright colours, making the area more cheerful and inviting.
The creche kindly treated us to a complimentary lunch. We hope we can do much more next time. Liam Marloth and Layukona Mhlongo
NDLOLOTHI GRADE 7
Our ECD outreach visit was enjoyable. Upon our arrival, we sang songs for the children and spent time playing with playdough that we had prepared for them. Afterwards, we played a variety of games together and organised an Easter egg hunt before it was time to leave. The children loved it! While some of us spent time with the children, the boys worked hard in the garden and began repairing and painting the jungle gym. We hope to continue this project during our next visit.
