WORLD SPARROW DAY

World Sparrow Day is celebrated annually on March 20 to raise awareness about the conservation of sparrows and other common urban birds. These birds are often known as mossies in South Africa.

Our country is home to five main sparrow species: Cape Sparrow (Mossie), the House Sparrow, the Southern Grey-headed Sparrow and the Yellow-throated Bush Sparrow. As urbanization and modern construction reduce available nesting spaces, these birds face growing environmental threats. Support local sparrow populations in your backyard by providing food, creating habitats, planting indigenous trees and shrubs and providing water e.g. a birdbath.

‘… you are worth more than many sparrows.’ Luke 12:7
