MAQHOGO & SHU SHU

The Grade 3 class drove through the beautiful Tugela Valley on 19 September for their day at Maqhogo Mission where they were welcomed with snacks and drinks after which they were introduced to the history of the mission and the remarkable story of how Baba Mfundisi began the work there.

Mr Witthöft took the children on bakkie ride tour of the farming projects, the fruit plantations, the packhouse and shop. A drive to the Tugela River was one of the highlights because they spotted a crocodile. They visited to a traditional Zulu home where the learners sang for the family and sat on a cansi (woven mat), gaining insight into authentic Zulu traditions.

As lunchtime approached, the Grade 3s headed to Shu Shu hot springs along the Tugela River. It was lovely to see their faces when they discovered the naturally heated water pools. After splashing and relaxing they enjoyed a picnic lunch of self-made wraps the dry riverbed on the boulders. By the end of the afternoon, it was a very happy (and tired) group of children who made their way back home, carrying lifelong memories.
