On 10 November, 10 new Grade R learners were welcomed to the school at the Grade R Induction Evening. Together with their parents and grandparents, they were given an introduction to life at DSS through a lovely slideshow. They met their fellow learners and the staff. They were entertained by the Grade 3 class who presented a poem and the song ‘There was a tree'. Henry, the puppet, made his appearance together with his sister and her rag doll. All too soon the evening came to an end, but not without something tasty to eat and drink.
With the introduction of a new Maths curriculum from Grade R - Grade 5, the Maths teachers were introduced to the curriculum at a course held by Jack Garb, Head of Singapore Maths SA, on 3 February at DSS. The teachers were introduced to the Singapore way of doing Maths. This is a comprehensive, activity-based programme designed to provide learners with a firm foundation in Maths. It also develops creative and critical thinking skills. This programme is designed to support learners at whatever level they are performing.
A vital part of every week in the Foundation Phase and the highlight of every week for most learners, is the Movement lessons. Cedar College of Education student teachers as well as the FP teachers present a number of these lessons. Children learn throwing, catching, balancing, aiming and many other skills vital to their development.
